What a week! We started the week with a national holiday, the annual celebration of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I Have A Dream reminds us that we have come so far as a nation but we still have a long way to go. When we take time to look at how far we have to push forward in order to make that “more perfect Union”, we have to take a step back to see where we went wrong. How Did We Get Here? We moved our focus away from growing as a nation and, instead, those in power focused on taking care of themselves.
We saw more political debates this week. Some candidates dropped out of the race for the White House and decided to avoid the Cuckoo’s Nest while others saw a boost in their poll numbers — though, given the track record, it’s a challenge to understand why. The surprise to some is that Mitt Romney, despite all of his spending (and smugness?) is taking a back seat to Newt Gingrich.
Despite all of this, other debates and primaries are just around the corner so maybe, just maybe, voters will use the time to pay attention to the false narrative we’re being fed. After all is said and done, there’s a lot at stake: religious freedom and the ability to make up one’s own mind, facing the reality (despite the Supreme Court’s decision) that corporations are not people, and the fact that we are not alone in this word — others locally and around the planet are going through their own trials and struggles.
But we move forward…and along the way, let’s educate, entertain and eradicate the borders between us.
