It’s A Wrap – Week In Review, March 25, 2012

This week marked another week of progress…and regress.  A very young man, Trayvon Martin, died a month ago and the man who shot him is still walking around quite free. Regression.

Many of us are watching to see what happens, especially since it is quite clear that law enforcement didn’t do its job; will there be justice or… just us? Regression.

So much for that post-racial society that the Right has hung their hats on since President Obama’s election. This entire situation is FOUL…and the only people who don’t seem to know it are Newt Gingrich and Geraldo ‘I’m With FOX News‘ Rivera. Shame on them. HEAPS of shame; they know very well that we need the safety of the law but, at times, we need safety from the laws. The ‘Stand Your Ground’ law? Even more regression — and aggression.

Continuing the regression, haven’t some recent  comments made you wonder if various presidential candidates live by the old adage that (paraphrasing), “Sure we’re all equal, but some of us are more equal than others?” Way to go, Rick Santorum! Come election day, if he should make it that far, Puerto Ricans will surely remind him that they speak enough English to say “NOT YOU.”

Here’s where progress was made: women are giving themselves a reality check. We know that we’re not quite there yet and there are many hurdles to climb over but, with determination, women can rule the world. And in other parts of the world, Pakistan’s president is moving forward despite incredible opposition. More progress; democratic action is on the move.

Speaking of action, movement was made on the issue of student loan forgiveness. Has the Occupy movement made an impact in terms of getting elected officials to look at the crushing amounts of debt under which American citizens are buried? Time will tell but let’s just say that great things can happen when groups of motivated progressives get together to solve problems. Where would American society be if we didn’t have dedicated liberals to fight the good fight and demonstrate that social contracts are as important as economic contracts?

No more regression. Progress — that’s what we need! And along the way let’s educate, entertain and eradicate the borders between us.
