This is America on Wingnuttery

What I’m going to write here is going to sound like it came straight from The Onion or from Saturday Night Live, but I assure you that this is true:

A proposed law in Arizona could give employers the right to fire women who use birth control. The bill, which sailed right through the state’s Senate Judiciary Committee, grants employers the right to ask for proof that contraceptives are being taken for non-contraceptive reasons.

Seriously, Republicans? You believe that an employer has the right to fire me because I might be taking birth control pills? Really? It’s not already bad enough that my employer can fire me for any reason he damn well pleases, but now, my employer’s morality trumps my own – and I can be fired because my employer thinks I’m a slut?

Of course, this is a rhetorical question in this environment of ever-more-intrusive wingnuttery being foisted on the American people, and women in particular, by the ever-more-extremist Republican Party.

What the hell is all this shit? State-mandated rape with vaginal probes, outlawing contraception and now this? What’s next, Republicans? Laws to prohibit women from wearing pants?  Laws to ban uncovered heads? How about a limit to the number of buttons that can be open on the collar of a woman’s blouse? Are you going to propose “decency squads” to roam the streets measuring the length of womens’ skirts to ensure that they’re not too short? Pass a new law that says that if a woman is raped, it’s her own fault because she was asking for it?

Hmm. All that stuff is already law in certain regions of the world and enforced by religious zealots. You may have heard of them: they’re called the Taliban. I certainly did not think I was going to wake up and find that the Republican Party has morphed into the Taliban – but they have, and it’s getting worse. It seems that every single day now, I awaken to some fresh outrage and am forced to pick my jaw up off the floor at the unbelievable overreach of the erstwhile Party of Lincoln.

When is this going to end? If I wanted to wear a bag over my head and be forced to hand my entire life over to some man, I’d move to Pakistan.

And now, a note to Republican women:  it’s high time for you to kick your man square in the ass and tell him to cut the crap, that you are not going to be shoved back to the 19th century, that you can make your own decisions about your own body and you don’t need them to legislate your morality, your sex life or the length of your skirts.

    Excellent article!

  2. Great post LsA! Thank you. It echoes much of what we’ve been posting since the Komen/PP incident. You ask, “When is this going to end?” If we can have any faith in our electorate (and I’m not suggesting that we can), then this egregious overreach by the GOP to legislate their narrow conceptual definition of morality will at least jar some conservative women enough for them to do the right thing and send them all packing in November! That may be wishful thinking, but we can hope! And thanks for the laughs too!
