Ann Romney – Mother of the Century

For a while there, it looked like the culture wars had been put to bed, if not for good then for a lengthy slumber. Turns out it was for slightly longer than a cat nap. And whom do we have to thank for this latest wake-up call? None other than Ann Romney.

In a recent tweet, Mrs. Romney said, “I made a choice to stay home and raise five kids.” She added, and I paraphrase, that it was indeed hard work. As the mommy of a newly adopted Golden Retriever/Corgi mix, I’m having a tough time with the fact that she’s forgetting the family dog. But alas, that’s not my major beef with her less than 140 character missive.

In classic wimpy fashion, Democratic pundits are having no trouble throwing one of their own under the bus for fear that Ann Romney may have successfully persuaded some female hearts and minds. They are apologizing for comments made by Democratic Strategist Hilary Rosen, who asserted Romney never worked a day in her life. The fact that I even have to clarify Rosen’s statement is galling; clearly Rosen was referring to gainful employment, not stay-at-home motherhood. Being a stay-at-home is unquestionably hard work. I’m sure Rosen knows this. Say what you will about the Mormon Family Romney, the sons all look well-adjusted and seemingly sane. Yes, being a stay-at-home mom is tough. But I’m sure it’s a tad bit easier if you’re rich.

And that’s the flaw in Ann Romney trying to position herself as every woman, every mom. That’s my beef with Democrats distancing themselves from Rosen’s comments. Call me crazy but I doubt that Ann Romney ever had to juggle cleaning the mansion, taking the boys to polo class, entertaining friends at home – and worrying about paying the bills on time. She was a stay-at-home mother without pay, without normal stay-at-home mother stress, because she was loaded.

If Democrats can’t call out the obvious idiocy of Ann Romney as Stay-At-Home Mother of the Century or support their own for doing so – Hilary Rosen – they should just abandon ship and let Ann Romney play stay-at-home grandmother in the White House.
