Though he said “I’m still here,” Newt Gingrich has all but officially stepped out of the GOP’s presidential race (go away…where’s the speech already?). He’s gone so far as to state that he will support Mitt Romney, the defacto winner of the GOP nomination. As of early this week Rick Santorum “suspended” his campaign. He finally figured out something that the rest of us already knew; mathematically speaking, it was impossible for him to beat Romney — but he stayed out there swinging all the same.
So, what now?
The hits roll on…the GOP is keeping up the fight even when it makes no sense for them to do so — and, based on their track record, it’s on the wrong side. The candidates may be ready to make nice with each other for the sake of party unity — but, for the sake of the country, let’s hope progressives are ready for the battle to come.
