When my oldest son, Mike – now 24, a husband and father of two – was a little child, he wanted to be a soldier. The years passed and he never, ever wanted to be anything else. He joined the Army at 17, and is now at the tail end of his 14-month tour in Afghanistan. He survived a direct hit from a roadside bomb, has made sacrifices, as every soldier does, and, though we’ve missed him terribly, we’re proud of him.
This song was written by my youngest son, Chicago rapper Mpulse, and he and I recorded it together. For a parent, watching a child become a soldier is an emotional ride filled with pride and fear. This song is for every soldier who has put his or her life on the line, and for every parent who has sent their child off to war.
I salute the troops, and the families of the troops. But most of all, this song is for you, Mike. We’re proud of you, and we love you.
