This will be quite a delicate balancing act if Mr. Christie wants to preserve his chances to run for President in 2016, something he seems to want to do after agonizing whether or not to run in the current election. For to satisfy the GOP base, he must pander to the ultra-right-wing mantra of tax cuts for the embarrassingly wealthy, service cuts for the middle class and poor, an end to legal abortion, and so on — but to preserve his own political base, he must temper that with enough sanity to satisfy Republican voters who have, somehow, preserved a portion of their intellectual ability in the face of today’s constant drumbeat of right-wing propaganda from Fox News, Limbaugh and the like. But his address falls flat, it will be like slipping off of a tightrope.
