Today would have been the eighty-fourth birthday of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., PhD. Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of thirty-nine. He was killed by a man with a rifle using ammunition designed to kill big game.
Dr. King was no stranger to guns, having armed himself as many other leaders had at the start of the Civil Rights movement. Shortly, however, Dr. King embraced strict non-violence and got rid of his guns.
But even had he and his entourage been armed to the teeth, he still would have been assassinated at the hand of a hidden gunman — a madman and white supremacist — using a high-powered rifle with a telescopic scope — for firearms are offensive weapons designed to do just one thing: kill.
The right thing to do, now, is to stop the killing.
