Giving up the Popedom for Lent

Every day, it seems, there’s a new story or rumor of an imminent scandal involving the decision of Pope Benedict XVI to resign as of this Thursday.

Giving-up the Popedom for Lent.

The latest is a story in Italy’s highest-circulation newspaper, La Repubblica, to the effect that Pope Benedict decided to change his name back to Joe Ratzinger the day after he was presented with a 300-page document detailing a scandal involving a group of gay priests in the Vatican who are apparently being blackmailed.  Or something — it’s difficult to tell because the entire document appears to have been written as a series of euphemisms.

Then, of course, there are the rumors that The Pope was having an affair with his secretary, Georg, and that The Vatican has offered him an apartment and sanctuary for the rest of his life, administered to by Georg, of course, as the story goes, to prevent his being tried by a foreign government for his part in covering-up the child abuse- and other scandals in the Roman Catholic church. Then, there’s the story that, perhaps, when little Joseph was conscripted into the Hitler Youth, he wasn’t as unenthusiastic as has been thought.

Or, perhaps, he’s simply giving-up The Popedom for Lent.
