Father’s Day 2013

Happy Father's DayIt’s Father’s Day, the day to celebrate paternal bonds and honour the men in our lives who are there either by blood or by choice. Today we celebrate fatherhood and its powerful influence.

Not all fathers are cut from the same cloth; some are actively involved in the lives of their children and some, perhaps due to extenuating circumstances, are not. Some do their parenting up close while others, such as those serving overseas in the military, do so from afar. It doesn’t, however, make the bond any less significant.

According to sociologist Dr. David Popenoe, ”Fathers are far more than just ‘second adults’ in the home,” and “Involved fathers bring positive benefits to their children that no other person is as likely to bring.” Fathers impact educational achievement, social behaviour and cognitive abilities of their children.

What’s the bottom line? male can become a father by doing his part to create a baby, but only a grown man will do his part with the dedication and love that is needed to raise that child into a productive human being.

Happy Father’s Day to all of the fathers…and the mothers who are masterfully navigating the role of both mother and father!
