Susan Rice as National Security Adviser

National Security Adviser director Tom Donilon is resigning. That may not be big news to some; the bigger news is that Pres. Obama is set to appoint Susan Rice to the position.

Last year Ms. Rice was expected to be nominated to become the next Secretary of State to replace outgoing Secretary Hillary Clinton, but Republicans vehemently blocked her prospective nomination after criticising her for presenting talking points – after the attack in Benghazi that resulted in the death of four Americans including a U.S. ambassador – that were later discovered to be incorrect. Subsequently, Ms. Rice withdrew her name from consideration.

Though it’s not the position of Secretary of State, Ms. Rice will be able to avoid a confirmation battle that would have surely awaited her had she submitted her name for consideration and been nominated:  the position of national security advisor does not require confirmation from the Senate. Included in the shakeup is Samantha Power,  a former aide to President Obama. Ms. Power is expected to be named to  step into Ms. Rice’s  position as the U.S. ambassador to the  United Nations.

*Side note: Somebody please get a defibrillator ready for senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham. This announcement is sure to cause something akin to a political heart attack.*
