At Least We Have Twinkies Again (Priorities, right?)

twinkiesAll day yesterday I scanned the news trying to decide what subject to tackle for today. What did I have an opinion on that was just vibrating in my finger tips needing to spill out into this space?

I found myself sad and disgusted at everything. Is there any other country that has such big topics like the Trayvon Martin verdict on the same front pages as Twinkies being available again?

I don’t know whether to be glad that I live in a country where disgustingly fake food dessert cakes coming back into stores is headline news, or if this should make me sad.

Even if I liked Twinkies (which I clearly do not), I don’t know if I could be Ok with them being such big news.  It’s a snack cake (and I use the label “cake” loosely). How is a snack cake news? Because this snack cake is part of Americana. It’s part of USA culture. A culture of quick, packaged “food”. A culture of chemically altering stuff so it can be deemed edible by the FDA…and have a shelf life of 45 days.

Gross.

Yet it’s part of our history. It’s a symbol of America. For good or for bad, if you look for American culture memorabilia, old school Twinkie marketing stuff is going to be high on the list of stuff that is worth something.

Yet, on the same page, USA Today suggested two stories about the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman case and one about a woman whose remains were found behind her house.

It’s hard for me to see these topics juxtaposed with one another.

It’s like my mind can comprehend both being part of the same culture. How are we the same USA that enjoys hot dogs, apple pie, and Twinkies…and yet we have children getting shot and their murderer is deemed “not guilty”?

And then I start thinking about all the Pro-Life people out there protesting abortions without any information other than “don’t kill babies.”  They don’t know what they are talking about when they say they want to criminalize abortion. They don’t know what lawful consequence a mother who has an illegal abortion should face.

But yet, they think she must face something. Abortion should be illegal.

Yet Trayvon Martin was a teenager who was killed. That kind of murder is against our laws. His murderer is apparently “not guilty”.

But good news, Twinkies are back in stores, and are now only 135 calories!  And will last 45 days!
