Wrapping Up the Week – May 13, 2012

Borderless News and Views logo

Review the past week with us at Borderless News and Views. As always, we had much to say about the political process; rites and rights; liberties and activism; and what it means to have responsible adults at the helm of a nation.… [Read more]

Social change is in the news, and that’s a good thing. The plight of workers became the focus, for at least one day, this past week. Folks, we are witnessing what dissent and direct action produces: protests and causes.… [Read more]

We’re in an election year and people across the nation are stepping up to make their voices heard. Some are fighting for progressive change while others are simply hoping that the nation will not move backwards. Of course, unfortunately for those of us who are free-thinking liberals, there are too many among us who are fighting the war against time…and progress.… [Read more]

Happy Earth Day, everyone! If you’re able to smell clean air and enjoy drinkable water, you may want to take a good look at some of the proposals coming from the right to ensure that those little amenities are a thing of the past. What’s a little toxicity-free soil and oil-free water when compared to the bigger priority of increasing profits for big business?… [Read more]

Don’t you find yourself wanting to drift away at times? You know…just take a break and let your thoughts float away like a cool ocean breeze? I do! Like many of you, I don’t get to relax, enjoy nature and have ‘do nothing’ time as much as I’d like. Life gets in the way; responsibilities must be managed, chores must be completed and (paid) work must be done in order to repay debt obligations.… [Read more]

Did we end this week the same way we started? Conservative magazine, The National Review, just fired one of its writers. Why? Because the writer, a self-described ‘tolerant racist’, posted an article to white parents that relays the advice he gave his own children about the hazards of being in close proximity to black people.

It’s April Fool’s Day in the United States!

How very appropriate given the amount of sheer foolishness we’ve been subjected to this past week. Let’s start the recap with Justice Scalia; he ought to be ashamed of himself. His statement comparing medical insurance coverage to people being forced to eat broccoli was a lousy analogy at best and exceptionally disingenuous at worst — but not surprising at all.… [Read more]

This week marked another week of progress…and regress.  A very young man, Trayvon Martin, died a month ago and the man who shot him is still walking around quite free. Regression.

Many of us are watching to see what happens, especially since it is quite clear that law enforcement didn’t do its job; will there be justice or… just us?… [Read more]

We’re wrapping up another great week at BNV. Whoo Hoo! If you ever learn anything about this Brooklyn Dame, it should be that I believe BNV has the most insightful writers. Have a look at what you may have missed during the week and read our take on some important issues in the news.

We’ve had some common themes.… [Read more]

What’s going on, brothers and sisters? OK, if you’re wondering why I’m calling you “brother” and “sister” it’s not because I’m having a 1970s throwback moment. It’s because I think that, like family, we’re all in this together — whether we like it or not. Frankly, I like the ‘brothers and sisters’ tag because it surely beats the names that are thrown about today (*STILL giving the side-eye to you, Rush Limbaugh…*He wasn’t joking; he was, and still is, quite serious).[Read more]

The end of another politically eventful week. During this past week, the big-mouth stole the national spotlight; the GOP’s poster child for bad behaviour, Herr Rush Limbaugh, behaved like, well…Rush Limbaugh. After several of his large sponsors fled the scene under duress, Rush issued a half-arsed apology. Consumer money talked and sponsors walked. Hopefully, this isn’t the end of that, um, incident; I’m waiting for news that Clear Channel Communications, his corporate overlord, drops Rush on his rather ample arse.… [Read more]

Say what you mean and mean what you say. Well, maybe that’s not always a good thing — at least when the person saying what he means is a certain sweater vest-wearing presidential candidate. After all, if a candidate says what he really means then (thinking) people may not cast a vote for him, right?

Thankfully, Rick Santorum has no filter; ridiculous statements he made this past week seemed to have the underlying theme of control — mostly over women’s bodies.… [Read more]

The Twitter feeds have been very active; so much has happened. Two things have dominated the news this week: the religious wrongs right’s imposition of their values on the rest of us (so much for religious freedom, huh?), and extensive coverage of Whitney Houston‘s life and legacy. For the latter, a wonderful tribute celebrating her life and impact she on the world of music made so many of us reflect on her talent.… [Read more]

This week ended with the passing of an icon, music legend Whitney Houston. At 48 years of age, the amazingly talented Ms. Houston leaves behind a legacy filled with publicly documented personal ups and downs — but history books won’t soon forget the impact she had on the music industry and song stylists everywhere; she touched the hearts of millions of people around the world and her voice will live on forever.… [Read more]

Open mouth, insert foot. The thing about primary season is that those of us who are interested and affected observers will be presented with several sides of the same face. There is the side the candidates want us to see; the side the media chooses to reveal; the version presented by the comedians who, thankfully, make us laugh at the folly of it all; and, of course, the real side that the candidates want to keep hidden.… [Read more]

Although we have moved forward by one week, events we discussed this week may make us wonder if we’re going backwards. Here we are in 2012 and we’re revisiting things that took place during the McCarthy era: loyalty oaths that threaten our ability to function as a democracy and ramped-up requirements that threaten trample on voter’s rights.… [Read more]

What a week! We started the week with a national holiday, the annual celebration of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I Have A Dream reminds us that we have come so far as a nation but we still have a long way to go.  When we take time to look at how far we have to push forward in order to make that “more perfect Union”, we have to take a step back to see where we went wrong.… [Read more]

2011: A Blurry Year In Review

2011

This is the time of year when those ‘Year In  Review’ articles appear. The thinking behind (some of) it is that in order to move forward, we should take a look back so that we may see what what we’ve survived and examine the lessons learned along the way. Here’s a small slice of what we recall in no particular order (hey, it’s still holiday season so we’re perfectly fine with being a wee bit foggy from all that, um, holiday cheer… [Read more]).
