Move On Up

Move On UP!

After this week’s Democratic National Convention, what choice is better than Curtis Mayfield singing “Move On Up”?

We, the people…whether we’re we the “you people“, we the “blah people” or we the “those people“, we’re ready to move on up and move forward.… [Read more]

Shadows of Intolerance

Intolerance will not be tolerated

“You have no idea how loud that is,” a man abruptly stated to a a younger man man listening to music on the train yesterday.

The older speaker continued, standing tall in his neatly pressed suit and well-worn baseball cap, angrily sighing between statements. “You don’t know, do you?  You have no idea how loud and annoying that is.”  He didn’t stop his verbal attack, despite confused looks from innocent bystanders, “It’s really like bees..just buzzing in my ear.”  His tone was condescending and disgusted at best.… [Read more]

Wooly Mammoths

Wooly Mammoth - like today's GOP

Do you remember reading about the Wooly Mammoth? I have read about them and heard stories about their mass and their extinction. I have seen pictures of them, gigantic hairy elephant, roaming North America millions of years ago. Hollywood has depicted their size in stone age B movies featuring Steve Reeves and Raquel Welch, massive tusk laden beast mean and stubborn.… [Read more]

Congress and The Election

Congress

In 2010, there was a midterm election. The Right took a seat majority from the Left. Reactions varied; some claiming to be totally unsurprised, others were more honest. Even in the face of what many termed ominous for President Obama, to his credit regardless of the validity, he took the blame. Some have appointed this stumbling block the reason behind the lack of faith in the European markets still rampant today.… [Read more]

#HugAThug

HugaThugSarahBurris_imagelarge

Yes, that’s what the hashtag said: #HugAThug.

During a check of Facebook and the Twittersphere for information about ‘work’ and organised ‘labour unions’ I came across that hashtag. Given that my search was rather specific and timed in advance of Labor Day, when that particular hashtag popped up it caught my attention.

It took a moment before things began to click; it wasn’t referring to a hip-hop album, it was referring to union workers.… [Read more]

Where’s the Republican Love?

Tampa Bay Times Forum - We Built This!

The quadrennial GOP convention is underway in Tampa, but there is a billboard  welcoming the Party of No’s delegates to a Tampa where, inconveniently, the Mayor and city council are all Democrats. The Tampa Bay Times Forum, where Republicans want to bray about the President’s stimulus and “you didn’t build that” in, was built in 1996, mostly using public funds.… [Read more]

In Case You Missed It: A Look Back at RNCs Past

Borderless News and Views (BNV) logo

The Republican National Convention is here. Yaaaay! (or not…)

In case you missed it, Chris Rock covered the Grand Old Party‘s convention 8 years ago. We thought we’d take a look back to see what, if anything, has changed.

Quite a lot. And not all of it has been good.

Funny how an agenda of obstruction can mess up how a party is perceived…… [Read more]

Akin to Rape

Words Have Power

Google told me today, thankfully, that “genius and madness are akin.”

We are enthralled in the dramatics displayed by some shockingly misguided and delusional beliefs expressed by a man who’s mother may not… [Read more] have told him that elves are make-believe. It is a display of how “we,” as a nation, allow powerful men to assume they have the right to say what they want without challenge from the people.

Raped

Todd Akin

Many Americans were disgusted at Congressman Todd Akin’s outrageous claim that woman do not get pregnant when raped. He says he believes, doctors have told him women have a process of shutting down their reproductive system when being ‘legitimately’ raped and that’s the reason there are so few births by rape.

We all know what Congressman Akin was saying; we have deciphered ‘Republican Speak’ many times over when they use racist statements in describing Barack Obama.… [Read more]

GOP, Please go play in your room – adults are talking

Buddies . . . .

What Romney getting the GOP presidential nod didn’t do, what the Paul Ryan veep pick didn’t do, what Donald Trump speaking at the RNC didn’t do, Todd Akin managed to do:  Fire up the base . . . sort of. Only thing, when Todd Akin spoke the words, “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down,” he fouled his own nest – not because what he said was shocking to the GOP (quite to the contrary), but because what he said framed what the GOP already thinks, packaged the GOP platform neatly into a horrifyingly ugly package for the country to see, and directed a spotlight into the sewer of extreme right-wing minds, including the mind of Paul Ryan, a man who teamed up with Akin to craft some pretty horrible legislation.… [Read more]

Republicans doth protesteth too much on Akin

VaLotteryLadyLuck

“You mean you were raped?”   “Well, at first…”

- Monty Python’s Life of Brian, 1979

As national Republicans were trying in vain to make “legitimate rape” armchair gynecologist gaffer Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) “take one for the team”, the Party of No merrily blundered on in their crusade against women’s reproductive rights.

Missouri’s statutory party candidate switcheroo deadline came and went, but the errant Rep.… [Read more]

Please, Mitt! DO Take Us Back to the 50s!

The 1950s in America: Police beating a Black Man

It isn’t very often we see a single tweet and it inspires a column. Today we celebrate the wisdom of a lady calling herself @JanC60 — a self-described mother of four, a conservative from Colorado who “was asleep, but no longer.”

Here’s her tweet.

“Romney will take us back to the 50′s”. YES! PLEASE DO! Morals, values, children allowed to be innocent, decent tv & movies.… [Read more]

Wrap It Up, August 19, 2012: Move Forward With This MoveOn.org Video

Move Forward!

For those of you who haven’t seen it, this week we’re wrapping things up by sharing this original video by MoveOn.org. There are fewer than 3 months until election day; learn what has happened and what you — and the nation — are up against.… [Read more]

Hypocrisy

GOP Hypocrisy

When the Mitt Romney campaign selected Paul Ryan as his running mate, it was the icing on the cake of Republican hypocrisy. In Paul Ryan, not only do you have a man who has spent his entire adult life working in Washington for the Republican Party in some capacity, Romney picked a man who actually used social programs that he now wants to eliminate from the federal budget.… [Read more]

Are Republicans Secretly Plotting A Communist Takeover?

397px-Christian_communism_logo.svg

For all of the much heated attention focused from the right on the “tyrannies” of social safety nets like welfare, healthcare, and social security, these actually may be the only things keeping the country from turning itself inside out with a full-fledged Chinese inspired communist overthrow.

To today’s conservative, this might sound odd. Some, albeit very few, would claim that without these safety nets the economic downturn would have been much worse.… [Read more]

Talking Loud…And Saying Nothing

The Cargo Cults of America

Cargo Cult

People do some funny things when they don’t understand what’s going on. In the 1940s, the U.S. built a lot of air strips on tropical islands where the most advanced technology was the fishing net. The inhabitants of these islands thought that the airplanes were almost as miraculous as the cargo they brought. They had no concept of industrial manufacturing, so when they decided that they wanted some of that cargo, the only way they could think to go about it was to imitate the strange behaviors of the people who received the cargo.… [Read more]

Make Your Own Punching Bag!

Doodle_287_Make_Your_Own_Punching_Bag

I was horrified this week to see an advertisement for an actual product, a Barack Obama Punching Bag. Thinking fair is fair, I figured we needed a Mitt punching bag to even things out.  So I made one.

Of course, you don’t have to actually stitch one up; it’s the thought that counts anyway. It seems that the Republicans are getting a bit more desperate as poll after poll shows President Obama is maintaining a slight lead, now even in the three carefully watched “battleground states”, Pennsylvania, Florida and Ohio.… [Read more]

98 Days and Counting

98 Day Countdown

Are you ready for the election cycle to end? When all is said and done, between each cycle we experience two years of debates, campaigns, SuperPACs, television commercials and online pop-up ads. That’s a bit much. The good thing is that all of this will come to a close soon, though not soon enough for those of us who’d like to see the decision made so that congress can get back to doing their job…whatever that may be.… [Read more]

Republicans: A Profile Of The Classic Abuser

cycle-of-abuse

Note: Julie Driscoll’s article was originally published in August, 2011 on Examiner.com, re-published on AddictingInfo.org.

As a former victim of domestic violence, in another lifetime, I learned a lot about the abusive personality. When it was over, and I was out, I became a domestic violence hotline counselor. The classes I took to train me for this job taught me two things.… [Read more]
