No Place for Racists

“Obama refuses to put his hand over his heart” were the first words I heard from the man sitting in front of me at Turner Field in Atlanta on Saturday. The public address person had just asked the fans to stand for the National Anthem when he started spewing his bigoted vulgar lies.

Where do people get this crap? Can you imagine in this day and age of instant media, if Barack Obama actually refused to put his hand over his heart? I was going to say something to the guy, but I was there to enjoy baseball and not start a political discussion with a stranger who obviously viewed the President with disdain.

I have heard other stupid remarks about Barack Obama since he was elected President, most unfounded and mostly mean-spirited and racist. For the record Barack Obama never refused to put his hand over his heart, that is total fabrication. Like the story that Barack Obama used a Koran to take oath of office, these stories have racial and bigoted beginnings.

The hatred for this man just oozes out of the racist, like a rag that has been soaked in a bucket of water. When you take the rag out of the water it is heavy and dripping with water. Racists are the same way; they soak up hate and it just drips out of them, sometimes slowly and sometimes it gets rung out and hatred just flows out.

It does not matter that other Presidents have stood with their hands at their side during the playing of the National Anthem — most notably George W. Bush. It does not matter what other Presidents have done or said. Barack Obama is being held to a higher standard just like other black men and woman have been held up to in their quest for excellence.

Jackie Robinson, the first African-American baseball player in the Major Leagues, was taunted, jeered at and hated by white players and fans just because he was the first black man to play a game. It did not matter that he was better than most white players, it did not matter that he served in WWII, was a college graduate and an officer. It did not matter he was an Olympian, a family man and articulate. The only thing that mattered was he was black — and white people hated him for no other reason.

The same has happened to President Barack Obama. Racists and bigots do not care that Barack Obama was handed one of the worst hands in the history of an American presidency; they care only that he is black and he is the President. Minority Senate Leader Mitch McConnell has stated the number one priority of Republicans was to make Barack Obama a one-term President. He said this before Mr. Obama even took office.

Barack Obama did not have time to become viewed a bad President, Republicans viewed him from the start as objectionable before he signed one bill. There was never a moment in the hearts of the GOP hierarchy to allow Barack Obama to fulfill any pledge to the American people.

From health care to the capture and death of Osama Bin Laden the GOP has stalled, lied about and belittled all of President Obama’s achievements. Policies that were championed by Republicans in the past now became pariahs. Instead of helping the country, the GOP chose to hurt Barack Obama — and if the American people got hurt along the way so be it. Collateral damage…nothing more.

I don’t think politics has anything to do with the obvious hatred for President Barack Obama. I think the people who hate him, hate him because he is black.
