All over the world, from Morocco to Indonesia, the Muslim world is protesting and rioting in the wake of a disturbing anti-Muslim film, produced by the misguided, for who knows what reason. When you look at the problem it sounds so simple, so unbelievable to the average American: people rioting, killing and storming American embassies because someone disrespected the prophet Muhammad.
I have heard Americans calling the rioters ‘animals’ and ‘pigs’ because they think only like an American — and it is mind-boggling to most Americans to even think of rioting and killing over a movie depicting anything. Americans for the most part find it inconceivable to even demonstrate against anything; apathy is much more pervasive and the idea of leaving one’s couch to demonstrate is just not going to happen.
When Iran’s rhetorical strongman President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke at the United Nations in New York City this week, noticeably absent were the American, Canadian and Israeli delegations. Over the last month, the right wing of the Israel Parliament, headed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has links to Mitt Romney and has all but endorsed the Republican candidate, has been rattling its swords with threats and rhetoric calling for the United States to draw a line in the Iranian sand. This preemptive walkout was in retaliation to Ahmadinejad’s recent rhetoric. This was preceded by President Barack Obama’s statement: The U.S. will do what’s needed to stop Iran from getting nuclear arms. This is not the first time the Obama administration has used strong words in denouncing the Iranian attempt at a nuclear arsenal.
In Ahmadinejad’s address to the United Nations he stated Iran is being threatened by Zionists and America. He also said the Iranian people will protect their homeland and way of life by shutting down the Strait of Hormuz thereby ceasing the oil tanker freeway. This would cause considerable problems for Asia, Europe and the USA as all three parts of the worlds struggle with high unemployment and sagging economies.
The Iranians test-fired four missiles over the strategic Strait of Hormuz as American warships move into position to conduct their own maneuvers in the very volatile waters, the tension between all parties involved are at high levels of anxiety. Benjamin Netanyahu played teacher with charts and graphs to explain to the UN and the world why Iran’s nuclear aspirations should be dealt a fatal blow sooner than later.
The politicians to the far right including Mitt Romney having been calling for more military spending even as America continues to struggle to maintain a positive economic environment — and as tensions rise you can hear the right wing call for military intervention in Iran.
Netanyahu is determined to start another war in the Middle East and at some point President Obama and America will have to say to Israel you are on your own. America cannot afford a war with Iran either financially or emotionally, and a war with Iran will be long and very expensive for the American people and the rest of the world.
A war with Iran will only perpetuate American imperialism in the eyes of rest of the Middle East and across the Muslim world and would only fuel more resentment, feelings of oppression and hatred in a good portion of Arabic speaking people.
In 1956 President Eisenhower refused to go along with Britain, France and Israel when they wanted to take control of the Suez Canal telling all three countries they were on their own. President Obama has to make it very clear to Israel it is not in their best interest to attack Iran and America will not be drawn into a long, bloody, economic disaster of a war.
Eisenhower warned the American people against the military industrial complex and his fears have come to pass. The explosions of protest over the infamous video are just the tip of the iceberg — and the sparks needed for people who have been exploited by dictators, who have had American military and financial support, an attack on Iran will be seen for what it is: American imperialism.
