How Regulations Improve Health and Food Quality

Regulations are necessary for our health. With strict regulations in place for food and public safety, people can be protected at a much greater rate. While not everyone agrees with regulations, arguing that the free market will regulate itself or that the government should not control what is bought and sold, there are some strong reasons why FDA and other food regulations improve our lives. These are ways regulations make an important difference in our lives.

Testing

Without testing, food and medicine can be given to the public without any kind of scrutiny. Before the 20th century and President Franklin Roosevelt’s efforts, food and drug manufacturers could get away with so much without regard for public health. Now, products need to be put through testing to be deemed appropriate for sale and consumption. It’s as important as making sure vehicles and buildings are built to appropriate standards.

Consistency

If you buy a bag of kaiser rolls, you should expect them to be all the same general size and shape and taste the same. With regulations comes consistency. There shouldn’t be any unwelcome surprises with things purchased for sustenance. This also includes the nutritional contents of what you’re consuming, as consumers need to know what they’re in for with every purchase. Manufacturers cannot assume that people are just going to buy something and mindlessly consume it without any second thought. Reputable food providers are those that excel at creating food of high quantity and quality.

Accountability

Food and drug manufacturers are responsible for adhering to regulations. They need to tell people what they’re being given as well as potential side effects, especially with medicine. It’s also vital for protecting people with allergies and other health complications from consuming something that could harm them. People’s lives are more important than making a profit, and regulations help to ensure accountability among providers.

Transparency

People shouldn’t have to guess about what they’re putting into their bodies, but they should also have the freedom to choose. Regulations give consumers transparency and let them make informed choices. These can reduce misinformation about certain items and prevent manufacturers from promoting something as being healthy when it isn’t. You have likely been saved multiple times without realizing it because you’ve grown up in a world full of regulations. They’ve also likely helped you avoid making seriously consequential decisions to your health in the long-term.

Regulations don’t need to be seen as restrictions. They give us more freedom to enjoy life because they help us know that something is safe. When things are regulated, there can be much more accountability and much less worry. The next time you go to a restaurant or have a doctor’s appointment, remember the important role that regulations play in your ability to thrive.
